Casino bonus wagering requirements: how 35x really works

A 100 euro bonus with a 35x wagering requirement is not a 100 euro gift. It is a conditional promise: play through 3,500 euros of stakes within a set window and the bonus, or whatever survives of it, becomes withdrawable. Most players read the headline number, accept the offer, and discover the conditions only when a withdrawal is blocked. The arithmetic is simple enough to do in advance, and doing it changes which bonuses are worth taking.

The arithmetic behind 35x

Wagering requirements are expressed as a multiple of the bonus, sometimes of the bonus plus deposit. A 35x bonus-only requirement on a 100 euro bonus means 3,500 euros of qualifying stakes. A 35x bonus-plus-deposit requirement on a 100 euro deposit with a 100 euro bonus means 7,000 euros. The difference between those two offers is double the work, and the marketing copy for both can look identical at a glance.

Divide the required turnover by your average stake to see the real cost in time. At 0.50 euros per spin, 3,500 euros is 7,000 spins, which is a long evening at best and often several sessions. At 2 euros per spin it is 1,750 spins. Neither number is unreasonable on its own, but both assume the balance survives long enough to complete the requirement, and the house edge does not pause while you try.

Contribution rates decide the real target

Not every euro wagered counts as a euro toward the requirement. Each game category carries a contribution percentage, and slots usually sit at 100 percent while table games and live casino sit much lower. A roulette spin at 10 percent contribution needs ten times the turnover of a slot spin to move the same distance. If your favourite game is not a slot, the advertised 35x can behave like 350x in practice.

This is why terms pages list game weighting separately from the headline requirement. Reading that table is the single most useful five minutes a bonus hunter can spend, and it is usually the section operators would prefer you skip.

Max bet, expiry and the sticky question

Three clauses decide whether a bonus is playable. The maximum bet rule caps how much you may stake while a bonus is active, often at 5 euros per spin; exceeding it can void the bonus and any winnings attached to it. The expiry window gives you a fixed number of days to clear the requirement, after which the bonus and its winnings disappear. The sticky clause decides whether the bonus itself is removed when you withdraw: a sticky bonus is deducted from your payout, a non-sticky bonus is not.

Cashable and non-cashable follow similar logic. A cashable bonus converts to real money once the requirement is met. A non-cashable or phantom bonus never converts; only winnings above it can be withdrawn, and often only up to a cap.

Expected value without the fantasy

A rough expected value calculation is possible, and it is deliberately unglamorous. Assume a 96.5 percent RTP slot and 3,500 euros of required turnover. The expected loss on that turnover is about 122 euros, which is already more than the bonus. The bonus is not worthless, because variance means some players finish ahead, but the average outcome of clearing a 35x requirement on a high-RTP slot is close to break-even at best and negative at worst. Add a 14-day expiry and a 5 euro max bet and the clock becomes a real constraint rather than a detail.

This is not an argument against bonuses. It is an argument for treating them as a package of conditions rather than free money, and for declining offers whose conditions do not fit how you actually play.

Questions to ask before opting in

  • Is the multiple based on bonus only or bonus plus deposit?
  • What is the maximum bet while the bonus is active?
  • Which games contribute at 100 percent, and what do the others contribute?
  • Is the bonus sticky, and is there a maximum conversion cap on winnings?
  • How many days do I have, and does the clock start at opt-in or first bet?
  • Does accepting the bonus delay verification or a withdrawal?

The habit that pays better than any bonus

Compare the turnover requirement with your normal stake size before you accept anything, and decline the offer if the number implies a marathon you would not otherwise run. Our withdrawal limits guide covers what happens on the other side of the cashier, and the RTP guide explains why the slot you choose changes the maths more than the bonus size does.

Set a budget before you opt in, never chase a requirement with money you cannot lose, and remember that a bonus cannot turn a negative-expectation game positive. Gambling is for adults aged 18 and over.
